Its time to have a Life Coach! The benefits of having a personal life coach.

Technology has taken over the world, some were prepared for this and are making the best use of it , some are still in shock and most are consumed. Facebook, Whatsapp, tiktok, Twitter, dating applications are keeping people busy. Most people do not even notice that much of their productive time is spend on these applications just viewing. In this chaos some are benefiting from the applications, growing business networks, adding to skills and gaining in tremendously. Now people need the services of life coaches more than ever, so that all the advantages of technology can make sense to them.

Who is a Life Coach ?

A life coach is a trained and certified professional whose main goal in engagement is to get a person or a group to a desired destination.(In Zimbabwe certification can happen through ICMF- International Coaching and Mentoring Foundation). Life Coaching like sports coaching is about helping and pushing the player to their full potential,to score. A life coach is an accountability partner and for the relationship to work, there has to be honesty and willingness to be coached. In life coaching they say, ”we coach the coachable”, meaning if a person is willing to do the work, they are willing to help them by all means. Here are a few points to consider why one needs a life coach.

The complexity of life

Life is so complex, and gets even more confusing as people grow up, responsibilities increase and expectations from people increase too. Most people change their dreams to match reality. Giving excuses like, “ ..I realized I needed to face reality,” in most of the cases reality means ,the goals are unreachable, the resources are too few or the willingness to pursue has faded away as a result of pressure. Life is tough but so are you. A life coach will help a person to know and understand what life is. To look at it as a whole and see the possibility of moving each and every piece without burning out. All life aspects at the table and the life coach will help a person to build the life they desire.

Decision making

“Its in your moment of decision that your destiny is shaped” Tony Robbins. What decisions. With the majority of people , decisions are more emotional than they are logical, as a result, when the emotional moment has passed, most live to regret and work to start all over again before the emotion took over. Anger makes people burn bridges before crossing over, excitement makes people disrespect people they have to honor and respect. Decision making about, careers, family, personal development, finances and investments, parenting, personal development, will be easier with a life coach by the side. A life coach will ask all the relevant questions and use life Coaching tools that will build the blocks to good decisions… A life coach will not give advice, he/she helps direct a person through questions to the solutions they need.

Everyone needs a life coach

Encouragement

Life can beat people down, people feeling stuck in careers and relationships, people feeling not-so-worthy or not so confident. A life coach , is the voice of encouragement and motivation. Please note that a life coach is not a mental health professional,a counselor or therapist, he does not help get over trauma or get someone through healing. A life coach is a motivator, focused on the possibility of the desired future and helping finding the steps to that desired future. Where the client needs a therapist, the life coach is expected to encourage that it happens. Exercises like vision board making are what life coaches can use to motivate their clients into positive transformation.

Some key guidelines in choosing a life coach

  1. How are the services they offer aligning to the goal that you want to meet
  2. What are your expectations from the coach and how willing are they to meet them
  3. Do you need a life coach or a mentor or both? If you need both, look beyond certification, have they walked the path that you want to walk?
  4. What’s your life coach’s story? Why them
  5. How far are you willing to go? An effective life coach will provoke, will push , will strain but not harm you, are you willing to answer the hard questions, do the hard things and to think outside the box? If yes then get you a life coach now!!!

The toxic work environments

The toxic work environments

Tears in the workplace? No!

Sharing negative feedback? No!

Unique style of work? Definitely no!

No space and time for life, just work? Yes

This is the story of many toxic work environments. People suffocating but still wanting the security of a monthly salary. People with no clear career vision, from where they are, but too scared to start the job search, too scared to ask for better standards and better treatment. Just stuck in the daily routine of an unbalanced life. Plenty of NOs and very few YESs.

Like most abusive relationships,

  • There is always something  to hold on to in order to validate your stay. It can be the stable salary, the benefits (car, housing, school fees, medical aid, status), which is also never enough compared to the sanity
  • There is justification for the toxicity. One may tell themselves that, “It is because I am slow to learn, thus the boss shouts and yells all the time. It is because the job came as a favour therefore, I can’t let my friend down by giving negative feedback”
  • This is much better than XYZ Company
  • People often lose touch with who they are in the process of proving their worth. Pushing long hours, letting go of hobbies and personal time in order to catch up and prove to be worthy
  • There is no transparency and there are no set professional and social boundaries in the workplace. Everyone holds a piece of information that may improve the organisation but would rather not share.. people always operate in the dark
  • There is no trust among people, its gossip about everything. Gossip is the main channel of communication

How can you thrive in this environment?

Everyone you approach may have their opinion on what they may be perceiving is the cause of your reaction. In most cases no one really directly points to the reason for the reaction(toxicity) they end at, “There is no perfect workplace”. This is a fact there is no perfect workplace, however as you seek fulfillment in a career, you do not stop wanting to pursue other things in your life, like relationships, professional growth, other financial goals and just having fun rewarding yourself for your work. There is a close to perfect workplace. It’s one:

  1. whose goals are clear and an employee knows where they fit
  2. which thrives in making an effort to know its employees and how their personal interests, characters and plans fit into its own and actively participate in creating an environment in which the personal goals of its employees stay alive and achievable. Feeding the passion !
  3. has intentional human resources management personnel and systems in place to address what may lead the organisation into toxicity
  4. consciously considers the other drivers of performance like the family and society instead of completely excluding them. Old school Human Resources management and modern saw people receiving groceries from the employer, inviting family members and community members to workplace social functions/events.
  5. It has open channels of communication
  6. Is designed to make the whole work experience contribute to noticeable growth of a person professionally and in other areas. Life skills can be acquired from work. Great mentors and teachers can be found in the workplace.

However, if you are already in it, at times you may need to know before jumping out if there are ways to help you cope.

  1. We always start at self-awareness. Engage a Life Coach and find out more on this. Find more about you. Discover how you can take power back
  2. Critically analyse the situations that overwhelm you. Is it the work (there core reason for your presence) or its other factors beyond the work
  3. How is everyone fairing in this same environment, finding the information and statistics will help you decide on whether to stay or not. You can also try to objectively reach out to former members of the organisation and find out how their experiences were
  4. Go back to the drawing board and look at why you joined the organisation, and how it fits in your life.

The above mentioned and more can help start really beneficial conversations and engagements towards your success. Always remember how you spend your everyday is how you spend your life. Self confidence is always threatened by being part of toxic environments. When everything has been said you hold the power to decide what can work and give you the quality of life you deserve.

Why Personal Development

Why Personal Development ?

There is so much information out there on how one can do anything, including the deemed simple things such as sleep , think,eat..you name it.. Why then do people keep searching for more information? What is the real reason for people to not be satisfied with all the information we get, we all wonder. Is the information enough to get the results or one needs to do more?

What more can be done then?

Personal Development!!!

Personal development is a lifetime process, of finding out the excellent values, attributes, attitudes , skills and behaviours that promote one’s success in all aspects of life, whilst not turning a blind eye to the negative things that needs to be addressed (or unlearnt) in order to reach one’s full potential.Personal development is therefore the  intentional work of gathering personal information, critically analysing it,accepting the truth and then doing the work to improve, to seek necessary help and to unlearn what needs to be unlearnt.

Why is it important?

The universal unexplained goal is success. Everyone desires it and wants it for themselves, their closets and their businesses.

  • Pursuing personal development is a means to self motivate. When a person has personal goals to achieve, his drive for seeking information and means to achieve is greater and more effective. So if a person wants to succeed, first they have to intentionally set personal development as a high priority goal
  • A way to organise life. Once a person seeks this, they approach their life systematically. They know to pursue goals by area of life. For example a life can be organised by knowing what makes life, which is health, career, finances and investments, relationships with family and friends, spousal relationship, spiritual wellness, fun leisure and luxury. Approaching life from this informed position gets one’ s life more organised. More about this in the next article
  • Great tenacity building– life is not a walk in the park, it has its many highs and lows. It is easy on many people to enjoy and celebrate the highs but it is very challenging to get back up after hitting rock bottom. Pursuing personal growth / development, increases the chance of a person getting back after a fall, learning and moving on in acceptance and knowledge.
  • Self- awareness -as from the definition,a person will know themselves for who they truly are, how others see them and be in a position to proactively improve for the better, unlearn and learn some things in order to be the best version of themself.
  • Confidence-wearing confidence like make up is the goal to total success. Confidence is enticing to employers, and general people. With greater self confidence comes great relationships, a flourishing career path, problem solving skills and motivation for life.

With much more benefits to pursuing personal development, these can help you decide to intentionally pursue, do a self-check and see how much you need the help of a coach or mentor in the journey to continuous growth.

What’s next?

Now you know why , in the next article we talk about the relevant steps to personal development, like planning, how to focus and getting rid of self-sabotage habits.
